Guy Turner, the host of the popular crypto educational channel Coin Bureau, is not your typical “Crypto YouTuber” known for promoting questionable cryptocurrencies. He has earned a reputation for delivering informative, entertaining, and clever content.
During the Bitcoin Amsterdam conference in October 2023, Turner spoke with Cointelegraph about his journey into the world of crypto and how Coin Bureau successfully transitioned from a blog-only platform to a powerhouse of video content.
Before entering the crypto space, Turner studied English at university and spent several years teaching corporate writing. It was in 2013, at a local pub called the Pembroke Tavern in East London, that he first heard about Bitcoin (BTC).
Turner closely followed the news as the collapse of Mt. Gox brought Bitcoin into the spotlight. However, he only started investing in BTC in 2014 after witnessing its resilience as a decentralized protocol despite the failure of the largest centralized exchange at the time.
A few years later, Turner and Nic Puckrin, a former Goldman Sachs banker who had delved into the crypto world, co-founded Coin Bureau. They identified a gap in the market for high-quality crypto educational content and aimed to fill it with their blog.
Turner noticed early on that there was a lot of crypto material available online, but most of it was poorly written. This realization motivated him to create well-crafted content for Coin Bureau.
The blog quickly became a leading platform for educational content. However, it faced a setback when Google changed its algorithm, causing Coin Bureau to drop in search rankings and almost disappear.
To salvage what they had built, Turner proposed starting a YouTube channel, considering the rise of other successful crypto channels. He ended up becoming the presenter for Coin Bureau.
The channel’s video content started with humble beginnings, shot with a basic camera in a friend’s living room. The focus was on substance rather than style. Coin Bureau began gaining views around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, as millions of people turned to the internet for entertainment and education during lockdowns.
The channel’s subscriber count quickly skyrocketed, surpassing 10,000, then 100,000, and eventually reaching 2.38 million subscribers on YouTube as of January 2024. Coin Bureau has become widely recognized among crypto enthusiasts, evident during Bitcoin Miami in 2023 when Turner realized his content and likeness were making an impact.
Coin Bureau’s content has evolved to have a macro focus while maintaining a strong connection to cryptocurrency and blockchain themes. Turner emphasized the importance of exploring the influence of macroeconomics and traditional finance events on the crypto ecosystem.
Additionally, Coin Bureau aims to educate its audience about the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem and address common misconceptions. Turner cited high-profile industry failures like the collapse of FTX as examples of the need for such educational content.
Furthermore, the channel will continue to advocate for cryptocurrency self-custody and promote industrywide best practices to protect user funds.
In summary, Guy Turner and Coin Bureau have established themselves as reputable sources of informative and entertaining crypto content. They have successfully transitioned from a blog to a popular YouTube channel, gaining millions of subscribers along the way. With a focus on macroeconomics, debunking misconceptions, and promoting best practices, Coin Bureau continues to educate and engage crypto enthusiasts.
