Margot Robbie, the talented Australian actress who stars in the upcoming Barbie movie, has sparked a conversation within the cryptocurrency community with her recent remarks about Bitcoin. In an interview with Fandango on June 22, Robbie compared talking about Bitcoin to the character Ken, Barbie’s companion.
The crypto community on Twitter, including notable figures like Michael Saylor from MicroStrategy and social media influencer Layah Heilpern, had varying responses to Robbie’s statement in the past 24 hours. Robbie shared that whenever she overheard her husband and a television producer discussing Bitcoin on set, it reminded her of Ken, the fictional co-star character played by Ryan Gosling in Barbie.
Saylor, in support of Robbie’s comparison, declared that Bitcoin embodies “Big Ken Energy.” Other prominent figures in the crypto industry also shared their thoughts on Robbie’s comments. Crypto influencer Lea Thompson, known as Girl Gone Crypto, expressed her bullish stance on Bitcoin after hearing Robbie’s perspective. On the other hand, Heilpern interpreted Robbie’s remarks as an insult towards men who discuss Bitcoin.
Heilpern took to Twitter on July 30 to explain her interpretation to her followers. She believed that Robbie implied male Bitcoin enthusiasts are weak and pathetic. However, Mark Travers, a lead psychologist at Awake Therapy, offered a different perspective. Travers suggested that having Ken’s energy could actually indicate someone who is selfless and adaptable in various situations. He highlighted that Ken challenges traditional gender stereotypes and plays a supportive role in Barbie’s universe.
During the interview, Robbie mentioned that it’s challenging to define what makes someone embody Ken’s energy, as it can be subjective. “It is not something you can define; it is just something you can sense,” she explained. Steven Lubka, a managing director at Swan Bitcoin, saw Robbie’s comment as a positive for the crypto community and expressed optimism in a tweet to his followers on July 29.
Robbie’s comments on Bitcoin were brief and neutral, coinciding with ongoing legal actions against celebrities who have recently promoted cryptocurrencies. NBA star Jimmy Butler, from the Miami Heat, is currently seeking to be removed from a $1 billion class-action lawsuit accusing him of promoting unregistered securities by endorsing the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. Butler’s lawyers argued that his tweets did not promote the named securities and therefore could not have contributed to their promotion.
Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, along with YouTubers Ben Armstrong (BitBoy Crypto) and Graham Stephan, are also challenging similar allegations in the same lawsuit. It is worth noting that the crypto winter can have an impact on the mental health of hodlers, as highlighted in a magazine article.
