The founder of Open Builders, the team behind the viral clicker game Notcoin, claims that the game has successfully introduced Telegram users to the world of crypto. According to Sasha Plotvinov, the game gained 20 million sign-ups within 26 days of its release in January, breaking records in the process. This accomplishment demonstrated that it is possible to onboard millions of users into crypto through gaming, surpassing the popularity of blockchain-based game Axie Infinity, which had a peak of 2.78 million monthly active users in 2022.
Plotvinov discussed the game’s success in an interview with Cointelegraph at the Token2049 event. He revealed that the original goal was to introduce crypto to Telegram users, given the messaging app’s massive user base and the promising technology of the TON blockchain. The team decided to simplify the onboarding process, making it accessible for users. The game’s social elements, such as interactions, competitions, leaderboards, and squads, played a significant role in its popularity. Plotvinov emphasized that within Telegram, it was effortless to onboard and invite users.
Notably, the game’s success was achieved without a marketing budget. Plotvinov stated that everything happened organically, with the game becoming a social phenomenon as 53,000 communities competed to reach the highest league. The team also took a different approach by not trying to convince users of the game’s value. Instead, they adopted a mindset of “we’re not trying to convince you, it’s probably nothing.”
