William Morro has been arrested and charged by the United States Justice Department for bank fraud related to the OneCoin crypto scheme. Court filings on April 23 revealed that Morro was responsible for transferring $35 million from bank accounts in China to one in Hong Kong in 2016. The indictment alleges that Morro then moved over $6 million from the Hong Kong account to a U.S. account that he controlled, as part of his fraudulent scheme. Morro has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and has been released until his sentencing hearing on August 1. The Justice Department has also issued an order of forfeiture for the illicit assets connected to the OneCoin case.
There are reports suggesting that Morro has connections to Gilbert Armenta, the boyfriend of OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova. Armenta was sentenced to five years in prison in 2023 for his involvement in money laundering activities related to the OneCoin scheme. Morro is listed as a managing partner of the InterAmerican Group and a board member of AEE Power.
The reasons behind the superseding indictment against Morro, which came eight years after his alleged fraudulent actions, remain unclear. The Justice Department has charged several individuals in relation to the OneCoin scheme, including lawyer Mark Scott, former head of legal and compliance Irina Dilkinska, and co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood.
Ruja Ignatova, also known as the ‘CryptoQueen,’ has been charged in the U.S. but is still at large. She is currently on the FBI’s list of the ten most wanted fugitives.
According to the court filings on April 23, Morro has retained the services of Mark Cohen and Jonathan Abernethy from the law firm Cohen and Gresser. Cohen is known for representing Sam Bankman-Fried during his criminal trial in 2023, where Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven felony counts and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
OneCoin, founded in 2014, was exposed as a fraudulent crypto scheme in 2015, defrauding investors out of approximately $4 billion. Morro could face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison for the charge of conspiracy to commit bank fraud.
