According to Railgun researcher and advocate Alan Scott Jr., United States senators and intelligence agencies may not be as opposed to privacy-focused crypto protocols as some believe. Scott, speaking at ETH Global in Sydney, stated that based on his conversations with senators and the FBI in Washington D.C., he hasn’t seen any indications of a crypto privacy crusade on Capitol Hill. He believes that there are individuals in the upper levels of government who are intelligent and genuinely interested in protecting people. Railgun is a privacy-focused protocol that ensures private transactions for decentralized finance (DeFi) users on the Ethereum network and other layer-2 networks. Despite being associated with other crypto privacy protocols that have faced legal issues, Railgun asserts that its technology prevents bad actors from misusing its protocol. Scott emphasizes that the FBI is primarily concerned with combating financial crimes rather than privacy protocols. He notes that his discussions with politicians and regulators in the U.S. have been positive, with many of them making an effort to understand the developments in crypto. Scott believes that privacy is a crucial aspect of decentralizing finance and that it is already a part of traditional finance. He warns that making privacy in crypto illegal would be unfortunate.
