CityX’s Pop-Up Expo is a celebration of the harmonious blend of art and technology, as it transforms traditional artworks into enhanced NFTs, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of modern challenges.
In today’s world, cultural heritage is constantly under threat from conflict, neglect, and the passage of time. That’s why the integration of technology and art preservation is becoming increasingly important. Events that combine art with digital technology play a crucial role in safeguarding and revitalizing these cultural treasures.
These initiatives are essential to ensure that the rich tapestries of our cultural past are not only preserved but also explored and appreciated by contemporary society. By embracing techniques such as digitization and the creation of nonfungible tokens (NFTs), these gatherings make art more accessible and engaging for a global audience, while also protecting it from physical degradation and loss.
CityX, an initiative dedicated to the digital preservation of art, recently hosted the CityX Pop-Up Expo at Lume Studios in New York City. This event, known for its ULIVE second drop, showcased an innovative approach to art preservation. Physical artworks were transformed into NFTs through a partnership between CityX and Hyperlab, and were enhanced with additional technological layers.
Curated by Eugenia Brodsky, the ULIVE collection featured 16 artworks, each transformed into a unique NFT that went beyond simple digital replication. These NFTs aimed to create a more immersive and engaging form of art appreciation by incorporating sensory experiences and visual aesthetics.
Each NFT in the collection acted as a portal, providing a brief yet rich experience for viewers. Lasting 8-10 seconds, each NFT included unique voiceovers and segments of a soundtrack by composer Dmytro Aksentiev (DJ Koloah), designed to draw viewers deeper into the art. The intricate visual effects challenged viewers to explore each artwork repeatedly in order to fully appreciate the underlying details.
In addition to the digital showcase, the CityX event also featured a lively celebration of music and dance. Led by Ukrainian DJ Koloah and featuring Erica Mancini of Gogol Bordello, the music lineup contributed to a dynamic atmosphere that blended cultural expressions with the digital art on display. The event continued its high energy on the second day with additional performances by DJ Lago, DJ St.Art, and DJ Vikudza.
Despite facing an unforeseen challenge due to an earthquake in the U.S., the event persevered, highlighting the theme of resilience through art and technology.
During the CityX Pop-Up Expo, attendees had the opportunity to experience the ULIVE collection in various ways, including in-person viewings, digital mapping, and an interactive demonstration via the WOWcube Entertainment System. The collaboration between CityX and WOWcube aims to transform how art is perceived and accessed, making each piece within the ULIVE collection more tangible for art enthusiasts. One lucky attendee even received a limited-edition WOWcube, specially designed with the CityX App, enhancing their engagement with the artworks.
The CityX and WOWcube collaboration is a step towards a new era of technological innovation through interactive devices. With only 16 NFTs available, CityX invites everyone to acquire a special utility that expands the availability of art and offers an experience that showcases art and invites active participation.
The CityX Pop-Up Assembly also featured panel discussions on various topics related to art and technology. Speakers included CityX founder Asya Nikolaeva, CityX chief curator Tatyana Tumasyan, guest curator Eugenia Brodsky, and CEO and founder of ARSNL Art Katarina Feder. The discussions explored the preservation of Fragile Art and the potential of NFTs as a medium for safeguarding artistic expressions. Denis Belkevich, founder and CEO of Fuelarts, also presented the Art+Tech NFT Startups Report, highlighting emerging trends and innovations in the art and technology intersection.
The Synergy of Art panel discussions, created by Antenna Gallery and moderated by Arthemort, featured diverse perspectives from the art and tech communities, including insights from filmmaker and CryptoPunk Sherone Rabinovitz and Scott Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of BitBasel. Ulive second drop artist Oles Derega and Luisa Leon, head of business development at LiveArt, also contributed their expertise to the discussions. These conversations provided an academic backbone to the event, emphasizing the role of NFTs in contemporary cultural preservation.
The CityX Pop-Up Assembly showcased the evolving relationship between traditional art forms and modern technology. By converting physical artworks into digital formats that preserve and enhance their essence, the event presented a promising future for art conservation, ensuring the longevity of artistic heritage in conflict zones and redefining the accessibility and enjoyment of art in the digital era.
