Buyers of a nonfungible token (NFT) known as the “Mugshot” NFT, featuring Donald Trump’s mug shot, have announced their plans to have dinner with the former US president at his Florida residence. On May 8, several cryptocurrency users took to social media to express their excitement about meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago as part of the agreement when purchasing the digital trading cards. It’s important to note that the NFT platform is not directly affiliated with Trump’s campaign, and the event was not listed on his website. Brandon Davis, a user referred to Trump supporters of Richard Heart’s Hex blockchain as “Hexicans” who will be present at the dinner.
The mug shot featured on the NFT was taken when Trump surrendered to authorities in August 2023 after being indicted for charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. This mug shot marked the first time a current or former US president has had their mug shot taken. In December 2023, Trump announced that individuals who purchased at least 47 Mugshot digital trading cards for $99 each would be invited to a dinner at Mar-a-Lago. The number 47 is a reference to Trump’s intention of becoming the 47th US president.
It’s worth noting that Trump is currently involved in a criminal trial in New York for falsifying business documents related to a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels. This trial is separate from the charges he faces in Georgia, Florida, and the District of Columbia. While he has been attending court on trial days, his court is not in session on Wednesdays, allowing him to handle other matters.
As the first former US president to face criminal charges, Trump has been critical of Justice Juan Merchan and prosecutors, resulting in him being cited for contempt by the judge multiple times. The judge has warned Trump that he may face jail time if he continues to speak about witnesses and court staff to the media and on social media platforms.
It remains unclear if the topic of NFTs or cryptocurrency will be discussed during the Mar-a-Lago dinner. Trump has previously stated that he has never owned Bitcoin but has accepted cryptocurrency payments for his branded products. Cointelegraph reached out to the Trump campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
Before becoming the presumptive Republican nominee, Trump made a few statements about cryptocurrency, including his opposition to a US central bank digital currency if elected president. He is expected to run against President Joe Biden in the 2024 US Presidential Election in November.
