Sony Music has issued a warning to companies regarding the unauthorized use of its copyrighted material for AI-related purposes. In a letter sent to over 700 companies, including prominent developers like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google, as well as music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, Sony stated that it prohibits the use of its music for training, development, or commercialization of AI systems. The letter emphasized the need to protect artists and songwriters and urged companies to update their terms of service to prohibit data mining and training on Sony’s content. Sony represents popular artists such as Beyoncé, Adele, and Harry Styles. The company expressed concerns that unauthorized use of its music has already occurred and requested developers to provide details of the content used for their AI models. The music industry, along with other creative industries, has been actively fighting against AI technologies that exploit artists or misuse copyrighted materials.
