The official business account of social media platform X made an announcement regarding a new feature for advertisers that will be enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI). On May 10, the platform revealed that its “AI Audience” feature will be available soon. This feature will allow advertisers to provide a brief description of their target audience for a specific ad, and then X’s AI systems will generate a pool of the most relevant X users that fit that target in a matter of seconds.
To illustrate this feature, an example was given where a user inputted the target audience as “Technology Leaders” with the description “users who are leaders in technology.” In just seconds, the AI generated a list of hundreds of users in the target audience, along with demographic statistics.
The post was shared by X’s owner, Elon Musk, although he did not provide any additional comments on the development.
In response to the initial post, one user commented that this feature would be a game-changer for the world of advertising and offer value for money on the platform. However, the user questioned the accuracy of the AI in targeting the correct audiences.
If the AI proves to be efficient over time in accurately identifying target audiences, this move could give X an advantage over other platforms when it comes to advertising. Other platforms would still require research to target the correct audiences.
However, some users expressed concerns about the AI reinforcing biases and stereotypes.
Another user questioned what exactly X is selling and who the target audience is. The user stated, “I thought I am the one paying so X doesn’t have to pimp me to brands and sell me to corporations.”
Despite some skepticism, many users found this development exciting and smart.
This development aligns with Musk’s proactive approach to integrating AI into the social media platform. On March 26, Musk announced that X’s AI model, Grok, would be accessible to all premium X subscribers. On March 29, the next version of the model, Grok-1.5, was announced, which boasts improved reasoning capabilities and a context length of 128,000 tokens.
During a lawsuit between Musk and OpenAI, with which he had previous ties, Musk declared that he would make Grok open-source.
While Musk’s AI company, xAI, has been actively developing new tools for mass use, Musk denied the accuracy of a report in January that claimed xAI had secured $500 million of its $1 billion investment goal.
