Elon Musk recently reiterated his belief that humans will require a “universal high income” due to the displacement of jobs caused by artificial intelligence (AI). During his speech at the VivaTech 2024 event in Paris, Musk expressed his concern about AI, stating that it will surpass humans in all aspects, leaving us with the task of supporting the machines. He painted a grim picture of the future, where AI will take over all human endeavors.
In other news, Musk’s AI company, known as xAI, has successfully raised $6 billion in funding from prominent investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and Tribe Capital. The company is now valued at $18 billion. Musk believes that xAI, although currently trailing behind industry leaders OpenAI and DeepMind, could catch up by the end of 2024. He envisions creating AI capable of human-level cognition, aligning with his prediction that AI will surpass human intelligence by 2025.
It is worth noting that Musk’s previous AI-related predictions have not always been accurate. In 2019, he famously promised that Tesla would have 1 million fully autonomous robotaxis on the road by 2020. More recently, he claimed that Tesla would unveil its first robotaxi in August 2024. In contrast, Baidu CEO Robin Li believes that artificial general intelligence is still more than 10 years away.
