Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com have joined forces to introduce and market a new “.blockchain” domain name system (DNS)-enabled Web3 domain.
As per the details shared with Cointelegraph, the two companies collaborated to officially register the .blockchain Web3 domain with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the global authority on IP addresses and domain names.
ICANN is set to introduce new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) by the second quarter of 2026. This gives Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com a year to get ready for the application process for the new domain.
In recent years, Blockchain.com has attracted 40 million verified users, generated over 90 million crypto wallets, and facilitated $1.2 trillion in crypto transactions.
Sandy Carter, the chief operating officer of Unstoppable Domains, expressed enthusiasm over the potential of this partnership to boost Web3 adoption. She stated:
Lane Kasselman, president of Blockchain.com, echoed Carter’s sentiments, stating:
Once ICANN approves the domain, individuals worldwide will have the opportunity to register .blockchain domains for the Web2 ecosystem. Unstoppable Domains intends to expand domain registrations by providing customized domain names for individuals, brands, and businesses.
In a related development, the ApeCoin community recently voted in favor of registering “.APE” as a new top-level domain (TLD) with ICANN.
A majority (91.68%) of the ApeCoin community members supported the proposal, while 8.32% were against it. According to the proposal, D3 will spearhead the application process, which is estimated to take around a year.
Fred Hsu, co-founder and CEO of D3, highlighted that the DNS domains offered by the company and those intended for registration with ICANN are interoperable, meaning they can be utilized for Web1 (email/web), Web2 (apps/social), and Web3 purposes.
