Normie, a project associated with Memecoin and built on the native blockchain Base by Coinbase, has announced the termination of its intern following the posting of an offensive video on its official X account.
In a statement, the Normie team expressed regret over the incident and confirmed the removal of the video. They also clarified that the intern responsible for the post has been dismissed. The team extended apologies to those who found the content offensive and assured that they are taking steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The controversial video, released on June 10, depicted a blue-skinned cartoon chef with exaggerated full lips dancing to a cooking-themed tune, drawing criticism from the crypto community.
Upon backlash, one user questioned the intern’s accountability, suggesting that the team should have supervised the content before its release and held responsible those who approved it.
Normie defended the video’s intended message of resilience and self-improvement, emphasizing that it was not meant to trivialize any sensitive issues.
Previously, Normie faced a smart contract exploit resulting in the loss of 225 Ether ($881,686) of users’ funds, causing a significant drop in the token’s market capitalization. The project agreed to a deal with the hackers to recover 90% of the stolen NORMIE tokens, using the funds to launch a new token for reimbursement.
As of June 7, Normie reported the recovery of 192 ETH from the incident and the successful launch of its new token at a different address. The project is among the 372,642 new tokens introduced on the Ethereum network since April 1, with 88% of them being launched on Coinbase’s Base blockchain.
In other news, Samsung’s Bitcoin ETF, a $700 million loss, and Coinbase’s exit from Japan have also made headlines in the crypto space.
