Overlai, a platform dedicated to safeguarding digital assets and intellectual property rights, has revealed the beta launch of its mobile application and Adobe plugin on the Aptos blockchain.
The technology functions by scanning media and embedding its metadata with an undetectable watermark. This hidden watermark is then stored on the Aptos blockchain, creating an unchangeable record of ownership.
Representatives of the project clarified that ownership remains intact regardless of how many times the media is compressed, captured through screenshots, or converted. It also remains consistent regardless of where the media is shared online or elsewhere.
Luke Neumann, the co-founder and CEO of Overlai, expressed the company’s goal to become a comprehensive solution for copyright and intellectual property protection in the digital era.
A key objective of Overlai’s mission is to shield artists and creators from AI scraping, a process where artificial intelligence programs and algorithms scour the internet to utilize media for training AI.
Neumann declared, “Overlai’s decentralized infrastructure from start to finish will enable the advancement of ethically sourced models by granting creators the choice to participate in or abstain from AI training.”
AI training methods are typically involuntary, with AI operators often neglecting to seek consent from creators, royalty holders, or stakeholders of a piece of media or intellectual property before utilizing it for AI training.
Overlai’s products reportedly deter AI scraping by issuing a “do not train” C2PA manifest as a continuous, comprehensive protection to prevent AI scraping bots from using the safeguarded media for training or content creation purposes.
Avery Ching, the chief technology officer at Aptos Labs, echoed Neumann’s sentiments and emphasized the significance of safeguarding content creators. “It is crucial to ensure that creators can maintain ownership of their assets and feel empowered by AI rather than restricted by it,” Ching emphasized.
