Tech mogul Elon Musk has issued a warning that Apple devices could be prohibited at his companies if Apple incorporates OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems.
In a recent X post on June 10, Musk emphasized that if Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, it would result in a security breach that he deems unacceptable. He even proposed that visitors to his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, would be required to place their Apple devices in a Faraday cage upon entry.
During Apple’s 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference on the same day, the company unveiled “Apple Intelligence,” a new suite of generative artificial intelligence (AI) features that will be implemented in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later in 2024. This development had been leaked by Bloomberg over the weekend.
One of the features includes the ability for Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, to direct user inquiries to ChatGPT when needed, with users being prompted for permission before any questions are transmitted to ChatGPT. This feature will be powered by GPT-4o, the latest version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Musk criticized Apple for not developing its own AI and expressed concerns that the company was compromising user privacy and security by outsourcing this technology. He argued that Apple’s claim of protecting privacy while relying on a third-party AI was contradictory and not truly safeguarding privacy.
Despite Musk’s objections, he did not provide specific details about the privacy measures integrated into the OpenAI integration. This led to a feature on his X post that provided a link to Apple’s press statement clarifying that user IP addresses would be masked and that OpenAI would not retain user requests.
The announcement of Apple Intelligence did not lead to a positive response in the AI-linked cryptocurrency market, with coins like Render (RNDR), Fetch.ai (FET), and SingularityNET (AGIX) experiencing a decline of 5.9%, 3.3%, and 3.9% respectively in the past 24 hours according to CoinGecko.
