Ronin, a blockchain platform focused on gaming, has announced the upcoming launch of Ronin zkEVM, a zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) layer-2 chain developed using a modified version of the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK) by Sky Mavis.
The team disclosed on June 18 that they will be introducing a dedicated ZK chain to cater to a larger user base and support the growth of their game studio partners. This strategic move aims to improve the decentralized environment, making it easier to incorporate a wider range of gaming experiences into the network.
Moreover, the team is planning to integrate a Polygon ZK prover into Ronin, enabling game studios to create their own zkEVM blockchains without the need to establish their own security and consensus mechanisms.
Prepared for handling billions in transactions
Originally designed for the popular play-to-earn game Axie Infinity, the Ronin blockchain now serves a more extensive gaming ecosystem. Data from the Ronin blockchain explorer shows that the network already boasts 1.4 million daily active addresses.
Jeff Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis, shared with Cointelegraph that the network is gearing up to manage billions in transactions. Zirlin expressed confidence that with Ronin zkEVM’s improved scalability, partner studios will have the freedom to innovate and grow.
The network has successfully onboarded significant blockchain games, benefiting from its existing player base. For instance, the Web3 game Pixels has seen over 4.4 million users since migrating to Ronin in October 2023.
Zirlin highlighted the advantages of the new zkEVM chain, such as a seamless cross-chain experience and potentially higher staking rewards. He emphasized that this move towards permissionless innovation allows third-party developers to launch their own layer-2 blockchains on Ronin, paving the way for more games and players.
Creating a cohesive Web3 gaming ecosystem
Trung Nguyen, CEO and co-founder of Sky Mavis, expressed their ambition to establish a unified gaming ecosystem that enables asset transfers, token swaps, and NFT trading between layer-1 and layer-2 games. Nguyen stressed the importance of interoperability in driving the industry forward.
Meanwhile, Sandeep Nailwal, Co-founder of Polygon, commended the impact of the Polygon CDK on Ronin’s development. Nailwal believes that Ronin is setting the standard by combining cutting-edge technology with a strong user base and wide distribution network. He added that the Polygon CDK will enhance Ronin’s gaming ecosystem, making it an attractive destination for game studios.
In the world of Web3 gaming, innovations like Ronin zkEVM are poised to revolutionize the industry, offering new opportunities for collaboration and growth.
