A police officer in White Settlement, Texas, successfully halted a scam perpetrated by an imposter pretending to be from Chase Bank. The scammer managed to deceive an elderly woman into withdrawing $40,000 and depositing it into a Bitcoin ATM. The White Settlement Police Department (WSPD) received a call from a vigilant citizen who noticed the woman depositing large sums of money into the Bitcoin ATM and suspected foul play after overhearing her conversation on the phone. The WSPD revealed that the suspect had threatened the victim with arrest if she failed to send the funds, a common tactic employed by scammers involved in fraudulent schemes. The victim was further convinced by the caller ID displaying “Chase Bank,” leading her to believe that she was dealing with a genuine employee. The scammer arranged for transportation to a local Chase Bank, where the victim withdrew the money, and then guided her to a convenience store housing the Bitcoin ATM to deposit the funds. In the dashcam footage released by the police department, an officer intervened in the conversation, preventing the scam from progressing any further. Unfortunately, the woman had already deposited $23,900 into the crypto ATM. The authorities are collaborating with government officials in an effort to recover the funds and return them to the victim. Sergeant James Stewart, the officer who responded to the incident, empathized with the elderly victim, drawing upon thoughts of his own mother. Chief of Police Christopher Cook expressed gratitude towards the concerned citizen who reported the scam and intends to honor them at a future council meeting.
