Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss have made a significant contribution to the reelection campaign of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Each of the twins has pledged $1 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) towards the cause. The announcement comes after the Winklevoss brothers expressed their intention to vote for the Republican Party candidate for U.S. President in a series of posts on June 20. They stated that they would send 15.47 BTC, which was equivalent to roughly $1 million at the time, to Trump’s campaign. The brothers believe that Trump is supportive of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency, while President Joe Biden has shown hostility towards the industry during his tenure.
Tyler Winklevoss emphasized that Trump is the best choice for the crypto community and businesses. He stated that anyone suggesting otherwise is misinformed or dishonest. Tyler also urged the crypto community to send a message to Washington, emphasizing that attacking them would be political suicide.
Tyler specifically mentioned the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s actions against crypto firms under the Biden administration and the “weaponization of the banking system against crypto companies,” referring to Operation Choke Point 2.0. The Winklevoss twins did not comment on the regulator’s activities during Trump’s presidency.
In addition to their Bitcoin pledge, the Winklevoss brothers reportedly attended a fundraiser for Trump in June, which required a payment of up to $300,000 per person. They have also donated approximately $5 million to the Fairshake political action committee and its affiliates, which have been involved in attack ads against lawmakers and supporting specific Democratic and Republican candidates.
It is worth noting that the Winklevoss brothers’ announcement did not mention Trump’s recent conviction on 34 felony counts, which could potentially impact his ability to run for office again. Despite leading the polls as the prospective Republican candidate, Trump is scheduled for a sentencing hearing in New York on July 11, just a week before he is expected to secure the official party nomination.
In recent months, Trump has remained active in the crypto space despite his legal troubles. He hosted a dinner for individuals who purchased a non-fungible token featuring his mugshot from a criminal case in Georgia. His campaign also announced that it would accept donations in cryptocurrency, and he met with executives from major mining companies, leading to his announcement of plans to ensure all BTC mined in the United States. President Biden has reportedly considered accepting cryptocurrency donations for his reelection campaign as well.
While many people on social media showed support for the Winklevoss brothers’ endorsement of Trump, some voiced concerns about the former president’s true intentions towards cryptocurrency. They also wondered if Trump would follow the example of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent candidate known for his crypto-friendly stance, in the 2024 election. It is worth noting that Trump referred to Bitcoin as a scam in 2021, after leaving office.
The involvement of crypto voters in the 2024 election has already begun, and it is expected to continue shaping the political landscape in the coming years.
