The global deployment of cryptocurrency ATMs has surged by 17.8% over the past year to reach 38,279 units, closing in on the previous peak of 39,541 recorded in December 2022.
In 2024, a total of 2,564 new cryptocurrency ATMs have been installed, marking a positive trend compared to the net reduction of 2,861 machines observed in 2023, according to data from Coin ATM Radar.
The number of installations consistently rose each month from July 2023 to May 2024. While there was a minor dip of 115 installations from May to June, June witnessed a robust recovery with a net increase of 377 units.
Leading the pack among cryptocurrency ATM operators are Bitcoin Depot with 7,543 machines, followed by Coinflip with 5,057, and Athena Bitcoin with 2,756 units.
Bitcoin (BTC) remains the dominant cryptocurrency in transactions, although Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ether (ETH), and Litecoin (LTC) also see significant usage.
The United States hosts over 82% of the world’s cryptocurrency ATMs, with Canada coming in second at 7.7%. Australia has experienced a remarkable surge, increasing its installations nearly 17-fold to 1,107 machines over the past two years. At this pace, Australia is poised to surpass Europe’s count of 1,584 ATMs soon.
Noteworthy countries with substantial cryptocurrency ATM deployments include Spain (313), Poland (279), El Salvador (215), Germany (177), and Hong Kong (169). Romania, Georgia, Switzerland, Austria, and New Zealand each boast over 100 ATMs.
Among the 193 countries recognized by the United Nations, 72 currently host cryptocurrency ATMs.
From December 2022 to July 2023, installations experienced a significant net decline, dropping to a low of 32,764 units. This decline was notably influenced by BitAccess, a cryptocurrency ATM manufacturer, which saw its net installations decrease by 26% from 9,160 in August 2022 to 6,774 in January 2024. However, since then, BitAccess has managed to increase its net installations by 1,208 units.
