Next week, executives from the cryptocurrency industry are set to engage in a private meeting with White House aides and Democratic Representative Ro Khanna to discuss urgent matters and suggest potential policy reforms.
According to a report by Bloomberg, this roundtable will feature key figures from Vice President Kamala Harris’s election campaign as well as the White House, including outgoing senior adviser Anita Dunn, National Economic Adviser Lael Brainard, and Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed.
**White House’s Engagement with the Crypto Sector**
This upcoming gathering may signal the administration’s readiness to collaborate with the cryptocurrency industry and tackle its regulatory and policy concerns, underscoring the increasing influence of digital assets in U.S. political discourse.
This meeting follows a similar roundtable that took place in July, which also facilitated substantial dialogue between crypto leaders and White House representatives. That earlier session included participants from notable cryptocurrency companies such as Ripple and Coinbase.
With around 50 million Americans now invested in digital assets, candidates in the U.S. presidential race are eager to attract support and contributions from voters engaged in the crypto space.
Former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump has been actively seeking to gain favor with the crypto community, capitalizing on frustrations among industry stakeholders regarding President Joe Biden’s stringent regulatory measures.
During a speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 27, Trump promised to position the U.S. as a global leader in cryptocurrency and vowed to remove U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler from his post if he were to be reelected.
**Rebuilding Relationships**
Since beginning to accept Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies for donations in May, Trump has reportedly raised over $25 million from crypto supporters.
In July, advisers to Harris reached out to leading crypto companies to repair the strained relationship between the Democratic Party and the cryptocurrency sector.
A letter from Democratic House representatives has spurred a movement within the party to reconsider its position on digital assets, advocating for a shift from a confrontational stance to a more supportive approach.
Additionally, the Harris campaign has appointed David Plouffe as a senior adviser. A seasoned strategist, Plouffe has explored opportunities within the cryptocurrency realm since leaving the White House in 2013 and joined Binance’s Global Advisory Board in 2022.
It remains to be seen whether Plouffe’s new role will specifically involve providing insights on cryptocurrency and blockchain matters.
