Crypto enthusiasts on social media have raised concerns about a recent wave of phishing emails related to cryptocurrency, which appear to be sent from the content creator platform Patreon.
According to reports on platforms like X and Reddit, scammers have been signing up crypto users’ email addresses for Patreon and then registering them for fraudulent emails from fake crypto projects on the platform.
The phishing attacks were first reported on January 23, with users stating that they had received fake airdrop offers from Patreon creators impersonating popular projects like Chainlink, Solana, Manta Network, and Sui.
In a post on January 25, Patreon Support addressed the concerns of the crypto community, stating that they had identified and resolved the issue. They explained that the problem stemmed from an email verification problem and a follow-up from a crypto account falsely claiming to be a Patreon creator. They assured users that affected accounts were being addressed.
A screenshot of an email allegedly sent from Patreon provided more information, revealing that the scam emails were part of a coordinated attempt to gain access to users’ cryptocurrency wallets. However, the issue has been resolved. Despite this, several users on X have continued to report receiving scam emails in the following days.
One user on Reddit, u/PhaseEquivalent3529, shared their experience of receiving six Patreon emails in one day, all discussing a “Manta” airdrop. Another user, u/fdlowe, expressed satisfaction with the additional protections in place.
Cointelegraph reached out to Patreon for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
According to Scam Sniffer, a blockchain security platform, over 324,000 cryptocurrency users fell victim to phishing scams in 2023, resulting in total losses of $295 million.
