An imposter app that claims to be the decentralized finance protocol Curve has been discovered on Apple’s App Store. In a warning issued by the developers on February 14, it was stated that there is currently no official Curve app for DeFi. The developers urged users to be cautious and stay safe from scams, as a fake app with the Curve logo had been identified. The unauthorized app attributes its creation to MK Technology Co. Ltd and provides a single proton mail contact address on its official website. However, there are no other apps by MK Technology on the App Store.
The fake app has received a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars with nine reviews and markets itself as a “powerful app for managing your borrowers and their loans.” The alleged scammer also claims that users can enjoy entertainment within the app by playing puzzle games in the Gaming section. It is unclear whether the app is simply using the Curve Finance brand without authorization or if it has been designed to steal users’ wallet assets using in-app features.
The issue of fake cryptocurrency applications has persistently plagued the industry. Apple previously removed a malicious Trezor wallet app from the App Store on June 21, 2023. This app prompted users to enter their wallet seed phrases, allowing hackers to drain their crypto funds. Similarly, on November 5, 2023, Microsoft removed a fake Ledger app for the third time in two years. This app had managed to steal $588,000 through 38 transactions before being delisted.
