Love and romance in 2024 have taken on a new look with the increasing presence of artificial intelligence (AI). New dating apps powered by AI have emerged, using sophisticated algorithms to match partners in a slightly dystopian version of online dating, with slogans like “where technology meets romance.” Additionally, AI is being used to enhance online dating profiles by generating AI-written bios and providing AI speech coaches to facilitate smoother conversations and improve chances of landing a date.
In August 2023, Tinder, a popular dating app with over 75 million users worldwide, introduced an AI-powered feature that helps users determine the best photos to use for their profiles. Bernard Kim, the CEO of Match Group, the owner of Tinder, expressed his belief that AI could aid in building “better, more efficient” profiles. In China, some single women have even turned to AI as an alternative to men, referring to their digital boyfriends as “better than real men.”
As AI continues to influence the realm of romance, we decided to put it to the test. This Valentine’s Day, we asked two chatbots, Google’s Gemini (formerly known as Bard) and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, for relationship advice. Both chatbots were asked the same questions, and we compared their answers to determine which chatbot could offer the best advice.
For the first question, “How do you find a good partner?” both chatbots emphasized the importance of self-awareness and clear communication. Google’s Gemini provided more practical suggestions, such as self-reflection, open-mindedness, participating in online platforms, and expanding social circles. It also provided links to psychology websites for further reading on “how to find love.” ChatGPT offered similar advice without external links, focusing on knowing oneself, keeping an open mind, and maintaining clear communication.
Moving on to the second question, “What are three keys to a healthy relationship?” both chatbots agreed on the importance of “communication,” “mutual support and empathy,” and “emotional intimacy and trust.” Gemini additionally provided “additional points to consider” related to the three keys, further enriching its response.
Lastly, when asked about ways to add romance to a love life on Valentine’s Day, both chatbots offered similar advice in the form of a listicle. They suggested planning a date, creating a romantic atmosphere, and being adventurous and spontaneous. Gemini went a step further by providing specific examples of “meaningful gestures” partners could do for each other and concluded with a “Happy Valentine’s Day” wish.
In summary, both chatbots effectively answered questions related to dating and romance, but Gemini consistently provided additional and real-time information.
