Amazon MGM Studios (formerly Amazon Studios) is facing a lawsuit alleging the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate actors’ voices during the SAG-AFTRA strike from July 14 to November 9, 2023. However, the production company has denied the claims and intends to defend itself in court.
Lance Hill, one of the original scriptwriters for the 1989 American action film “Road House,” has sued Amazon Studios for alleged AI misuse and copyright infringement in the upcoming remake of the movie. According to a report from EW, Hill claims that Amazon began production on the “Road House” remake without proper licensing or waiting for the copyright to expire.
Furthermore, Hill alleges that Amazon utilized AI technology when actors were unavailable during the strike to meet the November 10, 2023 deadline. The lawsuit states that Amazon employed AI to generate artificial voices for the actors featured in the “Road House” remake. An Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson responded, saying:
“Another source from EW, whose credibility is unconfirmed, stated that AI was not used to reproduce the actors’ voices. While acknowledging the potential use of AI in early production cuts, they asserted that Amazon had instructed the filmmakers to remove all AI elements from the final version.”
The upcoming “Road House” remake boasts a star-studded cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Post Malone, Daniela Melchior, and Jessica Williams. The film is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 21.
