CCP Games, the renowned developer and publisher of EVE Online, has finally unveiled new information about their highly anticipated blockchain game known as “Project Awakening.” In a pair of posts on the game’s official website on March 13, it was revealed that the next playtest and hackathon for Project Awakening will occur on May 21. As of the time of this article’s publication, signups for the closed beta are currently available.
These posts also provided us with our first glimpse into the game world and its lore. According to CCP, Project Awakening will offer a single-shard survival experience, where players will not be divided into separate instances. The game is set in a dark and decaying expanse of space, where civilization has crumbled due to its own ambitions. Gameplay will primarily focus on survival, the reconstruction of a broken world, and engaging in combat.
CCP has indicated that Project Awakening will incorporate some form of blockchain gaming, although the specifics of this integration have yet to be fully disclosed. A blog post from CCP suggests that the game may support digital assets, real estate ownership, or other forms of blockchain-based commoditization, but specific details are currently limited.
In addition, another blog post from March 13 appears to be written from the perspective of one of the game’s non-player characters, providing a tantalizing glimpse into the game’s lore. However, with lines such as “too long the gate network hasn’t carried thinking meat through its veins,” it serves more as an intriguing teaser than an informative description of the game world itself.
Cointelegraph reached out to CCP for further information regarding the hackathon and what testers can expect. CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson informed Cointelegraph that they do not have a launch window to share at this time.
