OpenAI is expanding its presence in the media and entertainment industry through new collaborations with French newspaper Le Monde and Spanish media company Prisa Media. The partnerships aim to deliver real-time, authoritative news content in French and Spanish to users of OpenAI’s chatbot and contribute to model training. In addition to Le Monde and Prisa Media, OpenAI has also partnered with Spanish-language media El País, Cinco Días, As, and El Huffpost.
OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting journalism and utilizing new AI technologies to enhance opportunities for content creators. As a result, users will soon be able to interact with up-to-date news content from these publishers through summaries with attribution and enhanced links to the original articles.
Le Monde, a leading newspaper in France, has millions of daily readers, while Prisa Media’s audience spans across Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Prisa Media’s Chairman and CEO, Carlos Nuñez, sees this partnership as a way to explore new avenues for audience engagement.
These partnerships follow OpenAI’s previous collaboration with German media giant Axel Springer in December 2023. The collaboration involved using content from Axel Springer to train OpenAI’s large language models, aiming to provide users with better, more current content and enhance transparency through article attribution and linking.
OpenAI has also been in talks with major media companies in the U.S., such as CNN, Fox, and Time, to secure news content licensing. Furthermore, it has partnered with the American Journalism Project to support innovative local news initiatives and the Associated Press, which also contributes to the training of large language models.
While OpenAI has been forging these partnerships, media companies themselves have been grappling with AI in various ways, including combating fake news, deepfakes, and protecting copyrighted materials. The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in December 2023, alleging unauthorized use of millions of NYT articles to train chatbots. The lawsuit is still ongoing despite efforts from both sides to dismiss each other’s claims.
In summary, OpenAI’s recent collaborations with Le Monde, Prisa Media, and other media companies aim to provide users with real-time news content in different languages and enhance model training. These partnerships underscore OpenAI’s dedication to supporting journalism and implementing AI technologies to benefit content creators.
