Virtual reality (VR) developer Victoria VR has partnered with artificial intelligence (AI) giant OpenAI, the creator of the popular generative AI tool ChatGPT. This collaboration will introduce the first AI integration within Victoria VR’s AI builder platform, which allows users to create virtual reality experiences using AI algorithms, according to Adam Bém, CEO and co-founder of Victoria VR. The AI builder platform eliminates the need for programming knowledge, enabling users to design their own 3D VR experiences, games, and applications. The integration with OpenAI will unlock a range of content-building opportunities, including in-game items, virtual accessories, and metaverse platforms. These experiences can be created using AI prompts from ChatGPT. Furthermore, user-generated content on Victoria VR is minted as nonfungible tokens, allowing for tradeability.
While AI and VR are currently trending technologies, they do have their limitations. VR experiences are still in their early stages, and the cost of hardware remains high. For instance, Meta’s recent Quest 3 sells for $499 for the basic 128 GB edition and $649 for the 512 GB edition. On the other hand, AI systems face concerns regarding “hallucinations,” which occur when AI models output new information that is often incorrect and not present in their training data.
Victoria VR also plans to integrate other AI technologies, such as DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion. The platform is currently available on the Apple Vision Pro and Oculus Quest 3, leveraging Unreal Engine 5, a popular gaming engine with a large developer community of over 7.5 million active developers.
According to Bém, AI will be the driving force behind VR development in the next five years. AI is already revolutionizing the gaming industry by enabling AI-generated infinite narratives and more realistic responses from nonplayer characters (NPCs). The pace of advancements in AI suggests that it will continue to shape the future of VR.
