Dogecoin’s native blockchain community has recently completed its own version of an airdrop called “Runestone,” taking inspiration from the nonfungible token (NFT) giveaway conducted by Bitcoin Ordinals last month.
Concluding on April 2, a total of 30,272 Doge Runestones, creatively named “Doginals” by Dogecoin, were distributed to wallets that held at least one Doginal from a specified list of collections provided by Robo AI, the organizer of the airdrop.
Currently, the Doge Runestones are being traded at a minimum price of 185 Dogecoin (DOGE), equivalent to about $32. Over the past 24 hours, the trading volume for these Runestones has exceeded $2,000, as reported by the Ordinals Wallet marketplace.
The Doge Runestones, all identical in appearance, resemble a golden rock adorned with the DOGE logo. This information is sourced from the Ordinals Wallet.
The Runestone airdrop by Dogecoin was influenced by the popular Bitcoin Ordinals-based airdrop that occurred in March. During this event, the community distributed over 112,000 Runestones to early adopters of the protocol.
Bitcoin Ordinals are assets similar to NFTs, comprising images or documents embedded into sats, which are the smallest units of Bitcoin.
Dogecoin, being a fork of a fork of Bitcoin, has the ability to implement Ordinals. The Doginals protocol was introduced by an anonymous developer in February of the previous year, just a month after the launch of Bitcoin Ordinals.
This protocol also paved the way for the launch of the DRC-20 token standard in early May 2023. The name “DRC-20” is derived from Ethereum’s ERC-20 standard and Bitcoin’s similar BRC-20 standard.
According to Doginal Explorer data, there are currently 149 Doginal collections and almost 68,000 DRC-20 tokens, with a combined market capitalization of $120 million.
The Dogecoin blockchain has even immortalized the 1993 classic shooter game Doom as a Doginal. This trend of running Doom on unconventional hardware, such as washing machines and toothbrushes, has become a popular meme.
Despite the Doge Runestone airdrop, the price of DOGE has not experienced a positive impact. It is currently trading at $0.1718, reflecting a 2% decrease over the past day and a 20% decrease over the week, according to Cointelegraph Markets Pro.
