Pro-crypto advocate John Deaton has surpassed Senator Elizabeth Warren in fundraising during the first quarter of this year in his campaign to secure her Senate position. Deaton managed to gather $1.36 million, while Warren only raised $1.09 million.
Deaton’s list of top donors reads like a who’s who in the crypto world. It includes Ripple executives Chris Larsen and Brad Garlinghouse, Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, Cardano and Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson, and Kraken co-founder Jesse Powell.
Preliminary filings with the United States Federal Election Commission (FEC) reveal that Deaton’s supporters donated nearly $360,700 during the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, he loaned his campaign $1 million.
Comparatively, Warren’s donations came solely from individual contributors, totaling just under $1.09 million.
Deaton gained prominence by championing the interests of XRP holders in the legal battle between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Ripple. In February, he announced his bid to represent Massachusetts in the Senate, running as a Republican against the Democratic incumbent of 11 years, Elizabeth Warren.
Warren has consistently opposed cryptocurrencies and has introduced bills aimed at “leveling the playing field” between digital assets and traditional financial markets. Critics argue that these bills would stifle innovation and investment in the United States.
Notably, Deaton’s largest individual contributors were Ripple’s Larsen and Garlinghouse, Scaramucci, and the Winklevoss twins. Each of them made the maximum donation of $6,600, contributing $3,300 for both the primary and general election bids.
Hoskinson from Cardano, Powell from Kraken, and Jameson Lopp from Casa wallet also donated $3,300 each to Deaton’s primary campaign. Ripple’s legal chief, Stuart Alderoty, made the same contribution.
The U.S. Senate elections, along with the presidential election, are scheduled for November 5. A total of 34 out of the 100 Senate seats will be up for grabs, along with all 435 seats in the House of Representatives. It is likely that former President Donald Trump will once again face off against President Joe Biden.
